This case describes one of the first geographically-focused foundations in Mexico, Oaxaca’s Community Foundation (FCO, for its Spanish acronym). FCO was created by a group of international foundations –the Rockefeller Foundation, International Youth Foundation, Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, and Kellogg Foundation- that were later joined by renowned business and social leaders in Oaxaca to address the social conflicts in Mexico’s southern region (e.g., Chiapas). FCO’s experience provides an interesting overview of interactions between business and social communities, as well as the strategic change driven by cross-sector projects that focus on specific locations and explicitly promote network collaborations and social value creation.
