This case may be used to encourage class participants to discuss economic feasibility for social projects, analyzing sustainability and its fit with organizations’ missions. Specifically, this case provides an example to consider the development of business portfolios, discussing whether individual ventures contribute to value creation and mission accomplishment. At the same time, it leads students to reflect on the key factors to be taken into account in order to ensure portfolio success.

know moreThis case is designed to be used in Social Entrepreneurship courses in MBA or MSc-level programs to discuss business models that put the target population for whom they generate social impact at the center of solutions, as active agents of change rather than passive “beneficiaries,” and the tensions that arise between the financial and social dimensions of the business not only when developing the entrepreneurial venture but also when adapting in response to changing environments. It works well to use the case in a session that comes after students have grasped the basics of what defines a social enterprise but before
examining the topic of impact measurement, a topic the case can serve to introduce.
The case can also work well to discuss values-based management models and leadership approaches in
Responsible Leadership courses or with senior leaders who are seeking reflection about the type of leader
they want to be and the type of organization they want to lead.
This is a real case, based on information drawn from in-depth interviews with actual protagonists and publications, audiovisual materials and other sources. It was prepared for advanced undergraduate courses (BBA programs) and graduate programs (MSc and/or MBAs), assuming students are already familiar with notions on corporate strategy and the analysis of the social and
environmental implications of business strategies, as well as with strategic analysis exercises. It may be used in courses on strategy, entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, sustainable companies, or other associated topics, such as corporate responsibility or sustainability.
